The Truth About Your Racing Mind

My client says, "oh man, it's been intense. I have so much on, my mind is racing, it's hard to concentrate, so much, I can't sleep, it's a lot!"⠀

Many people pride themselves on a 'fast mind' and being 'quick-witted.' It's easy to mistake a racing mind for one that is alive with ideas. A racing mind is a symptom of hyperactivity in your nervous system. It's not the same as an inspired mind, but it can feel deceptively similar until you pay the price in exhaustion.⠀



A racing mind...⠀

1. is actually a symptom of a tired body. Have you noticed that you tend to rush when you feel tired? The faster your mind runs, the less you feel because you are disassociated.⠀

2. is not productive. It just thinks it is. Have you noticed that racing minds loop into these blind-ending thought loops and repeat the patterns? You think you think a lot. But the quality is relatively low. Choose Quality over Quantity!⠀

3. leads to addictive behaviours from mindless scrolling to numbing out with food/drink/etc. It's fascinating how much time is 'wasted' on trying to feel good when we don't feel comfortable in our skin.⠀

4. is bound to let you make mistakes. You are preoccupied. Minor mistakes can cost a lot of time, money, energy. Had you done things correctly... but no, you were rushing it because your mind tells you to.⠀

5. robs you of beautiful presence. Your greatest asset. Is that really worth it?⠀

6. leaves you unsettled. We avoid that feeling by retrieving more into our heads. Or do shit that distracts from that discomfort. All you really need is to feel safe/ok in being you at the moment. ⠀

A racing mind is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.⠀
To calm a racing mind, don't wait for others to say the right things, do the right things.⠀

Here is what YOU can do: ⠀
Bring yourself back to your body.⠀
Slow (the fuck) down. Everything. Your movement. Your activity. Give yourself some assurance. You are ok. You are safe. Hold yourself for a moment. Take a deep breath. Walk in nature. Shake. Dance. Sing. ⠀
From a slower pace, you can see clearly. Move with grace and precision. Business by Pleasure trumps Business by Speed. Always.
